MASKS is an international multidisciplinary project that explores the complex emotional, identity related and cultural dimensions of human experience through the creation and performative use of masks.
For thousands of years, masks have been used to explore identity and the symbolic meaning of emotions through rituals and theatrical expression in cultures around the world. As a universal symbol of transformation, they represent a shared heritage of humanity. This universality is the starting point of the project, which places this ancient symbol within a contemporary artistic context and uses it as a tool for intercultural dialogue and emotional articulation. The mask becomes a common point of departure through which different cultures, traditions and generations can meet.
Within the project, the mask functions as a visual, physical and symbolic medium of transformation. Through the creative process, participants create masks that embody specific emotions and personal narratives. Their encounter culminates in a collective performative composition, a poetic reflection of human relationships, tensions and synergies.
Led artistically by Inti Šraj, the project takes place in different cultural contexts and is based on collaboration with local communities, artists and institutions in each location. Its international dimension is essential. The project builds on the exchange of knowledge, artistic practices and cultural perspectives while strengthening intercultural competencies, creative reflection and a sense of community.
