Ljubljana, Zagreb and Rijeka are part of a CORNERS map from the very beginning of the project: Balkan Xpedition in April 2012 started in Zagreb with a guided tour through the Museum of Contemporary art by Dragan Živadinov and finished in Rijeka with a boat trip around the Kvarner bay; Ljubljana hosted the first Kids on the Corners event in June 2014. Rijeka as a newly appointed European Capital of Culture 2020, and Zagreb and Ljubljana as capitals of Croatia and Slovenia, divided by not more than 200 kilometres are joining in a CORNERS Triangle to bring you many stories we’ve been collecting around the Europe. From 30 May to 18 Jun 2016 More than 20 CORNERS artists from all over the Europe will be working with audiences and presenting their artworks.
Collecting and building the micro-archives is a core method for three works that will be presented: Atlas of Tremors gathered folk songs sung by textile workers and through the re-interpretation of those songs is dealing with the changes in the textile industry production; Voiceover is collecting personal stories on social, environmental, and industrial change; while Playground collects games typical for specific areas, and reshaping some of them into new, sometimes improbable and bizarre set of rules for players.
CORNERS Triangle will host two exhibitions, both dealing with a notion of change. Put yourself in my place is following two artists from Croatia and Sweden who swapped their lives for three weeks, in order to research different ways in which society approaches art. By entering the life of each other, they did not play an imitation game, but brought their own personalities into a different context. The topic of Hide and Reveal is travelling, the constant change of location and is trying to detect what is hidden and what is revealed to us when we appear as strangers in yet unknown environment.
Many areas we’ve been researching through CORNERS have been affected by conflict. Bridging the Silence is bringing together stories from Basque Country, Northern Ireland and Croatia, stories of the ones who suffered from political, sexual and domestic violence, and is exposing their emotional journey from the storm inside to peace. The audio tour on the pedestrian bridge in Ljubljana and Zagreb will be an incentive to collect new stories and share it on future CORNERS events. In Between is playing with an observation as a method for bringing together people living in the same neighbourhood. Together with a community they are transforming a public space into a site for creation. Sister of Another Mama is questioning the media and focusing on the daily life of editorial office…
Apart from that, CORNERS Triangle will bring you Flashes, a series of short films screened in previous years at DocuFest Prizren, and other smaller and bigger events through the duration of the event. The entrance and participation on the whole program is free, and you can expect detailed schedule very soon. Hope you’ll get caught in at least in one corner of our Triangle.
